What is the future for breeding stock? Good stock will always sell higher. Commercial herds will realize that improving their profits will come via new bulls from selectively bred herds , but in order for that to come about, producers will need to have breeding records and performance data.
Public herds will remain as an invaluable back-up for all producers. All (artificial insemination) and ET (embryo transfers) are methods to accelerate breeding of exceptional and desirable traits. We cannot prevent AI and ET from being used for bison. Remember that bison have sustained tremendous loses and remain foremost, a survivor. This does not mean that we can do anything with them, but that what we do do, must be done with respect.
We purchased our first three bison in 1993 and knew from the beginning that selective breeding and making food stock better was what we wanted to do. There are things that we have done since we started that are as important for us today as they were in the beginning and they include; selective breeding, parentage identification, and marketing, especially through show and sales.
Why did we choose to concentrate on breeding stock? Our backgrounds gave us experience in registered livestock.
Selective breeding is the process of matching preferred specimens. There is no gene manipulation. In bison this is accomplished by arranging single sire pastures. We have not and do not plan on the use of artificial insemination to plan parentage. Running single-sire pastures requires planning, it requires that your pastures are separate and that bulls are out of sight of each other, and you must be cognizant of families and sister groups that will not flourish if they are split up.
